The Babadook

The Babadook is a 2014 Australian psychological horror film directed by Jennifer Kent in her directorial debut, and written by Kent. The film stars Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Hayley McElhinney, Daniel Henshall, and Ben Winspear. It is based on the 2005 short film Monster, also directed by Kent. The Babadook was originally scheduled to be released in 2013 but was pushed back due to financial difficulties. The Babadook was shown at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival under the title The Babadook. It was released in Australia on 6 November 2014 and subsequent to positive reviews at Sundance, was acquired by IFC Midnight for distribution in the United States.

The Babadook tells the story of a single mother who, after the death of her husband in a car accident, becomes convinced that a monster from a children’s book she is reading to her son is real and is coming to get them both.

The Ring

The Ring is a 2002 American supernatural horror film directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, David Dorfman, Brian Cox, and Daveigh Chase. It is a remake of the 1998 Japanese horror film Ringu, which in turn is based on the novel by Koji Suzuki. The Ring was released theatrically on October 18, 2002 and grossed over $249 million worldwide. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and was nominated for four Academy Awards.

A sequel, The Ring Two, was released on March 18, 2005. Rachel Keller (Watts) is a journalist investigating a videotape that kills whoever watches it seven days after viewing. She discovers that the tape features footage from a cursed house in Seattle, Washington and sets out to investigate it with the help of her ex-boyfriend Noah Clay (Henderson). Noah’s son Aidan (Dorfman) watches the tape and becomes possessed by Samara Morgan (Chase), the cursed child who died in the house. Rachel enters the house in an attempt to rescue Aidan but instead becomes trapped inside with him. They are eventually rescued by Noah and his girlfriend Emily (Cox).

The film was followed by a sequel, The Ring Two, in 2005.

The Exorcist

The Exorcist is a classic horror movie that was released in 1973. The movie is about a young girl who is possessed by a demon and her mother who hires two priests to try and save her. The Exorcist was so successful that it spawned two sequels, an inscribed TV series, and merchandise.

The Shining

The Shining is a horror movie classic, and one that is absolutely essential viewing for any fan of the genre. Released in 1980, the film was directed by Stanley Kubrick and stars Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance, a man who takes a job as the caretaker of an isolated hotel during the off-season. When strange things begin to happen at the hotel, Jack descends into madness, putting his wife and young son in grave danger. The Shining is a truly terrifying film, and one that is sure to send a chill down your spine.
